Genetically modified foods (or GMOs) refer to crops that have been modified with molecular biology techniques in order to add beneficial traits such as increased resistance to herbicides and pesticides, increased nutritional content, and ability to produce natural pesticides. Also, genetically modified foods can be produced in mass quantities. In the past, cross-breeding was used to enhance beneficial traits but it is more costly, time consuming, and less accurate than genetic techniques. Despite the many benefits to using genetically modified foods, environmental and ethics groups have criticized and protested against the administration of genetically modified foods. Environmental groups say that the damages that GMOs cause on the environment is irreparable to certain species and ethics groups claim that GMOs may have an unintended negative effect on the human health. During my persuasive speech, I will address why the advent of the genetically modified foods is world changing and why governments should allow for the administration of certain genetically modified foods.

This is great Sophie. Make sure you consider this for your audience too... we are college students and need/want cheaper food. if genetically altering food is how we can get that, is that a main point for your speech. Remember to make it relevant even though your topic is broad.
