The number of international students in universities and higher learning institutions in the United States has been increasing consistently for the past few years. The top three countries from which international students originate are India, China, and Korea. Additionally, international students generate approximately $18 billion for the economy. Because of this significant figure, I believe that it is important to establish strong support, both financial and political, for international students. One measure of legislation created to do so is the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM, Act. It offers undocumented/alien students who are of good moral and academic standing the opportunity to acquire permanent residency in order to continue their studies. Drafted in 2001, the act has yet to pass but is slated for reconsideration in the upcoming lame duck session. In my persuasive speech, I hope to convince you to write your state senators and House representatives regarding the hopeful passage of this act.

When i was a freshman in college, I was one of SEVEN international students on campus. My undergrad alma matter has significantly increased their international population and, with that, the programs set in place to help international students overcome culture shock and other logistical affairs.
