Africa is the world’s second biggest continent. With a population of over one billion, it is filled with various ethnicities, languages, and customs. It was once seen as an exquisite place where travelers from all over the world would come to trade and learn. Now it is seen as a war torn, disease ravaged, and starving continent. For years, more and more problems have risen in Africa without much attention from the western world.
Starvation, disease, and civil war have taken a heavy toll on much of the population in Somalia. For years, a civil war has been waged by the al-Shaab, a terrorist group, against the government. Many civilians have been displaced or killed because of the fighting. After Afghanistan and Iraq, Somalia has the largest number of refugees in the world. Somalia also faces issues such as drought and children soldiers. In my information brief I will discuss the history behind the civil war in Somalia, societal issues, and what other countries are doing to help this situation.
Great topic choice!! I think you are taking on a great challenge of condensing the large amounts of information that are out there regarding the situation in Somalia. Make sure that you stick to factual and objective comments, however, your persuasive speech won't come for another couple of months :)
