People say you learn something new everyday. Lisa Rowan is our guest speaker who works for TBD. TBD: To Be Determined is a local news website with contributions from community blogs and bloggers. I had no idea what TBD was until class on Friday. After class I decided to take a look at the website. TBD is definitely appealing and successful which correlates to the three main points Lisa stressed being a good speaker. The three points are: creditibility, confidence, and conciseness.
- Credibility: important because you must do research in order to have full knowledge of what you want to inform others about. If you don`t have research, you won`t be able to back it up. People are more likely to pay attention to things with credibility.
- Confidence: in order to have confidence, one must do his or her research. Confidence automatically builds up when a person is familiar with the topic. Once again research on a topic plays an essential role.
- Conciseness: it is always good to keep things brief. Short, straight to the point is what you should aim for. People`s attention span lasts only about couple of minutes so, make sure what you say is unique.
On a side note, Lisa also told us that "every medium should match up." She gave an example as to not listing certain playful qualities of yourself on facebook. An employer would not think fondly of your profile, and would probably not hire you. We have to keep in mind that anyone could potentially have access to any of our information we post online.
