Legendary Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs is one of the most respected and reputable coaches in National Football League History. From his humble roots as an assistant coach for the San Diego Padres, Gibbs was hired by the Washington Redskins and almost instantly built his own immortality. In his first stint with the Redskins from 1981 to 1992, Gibbs led the Redskins to four Super Bowls, winning three. After his retirement from the sport, Gibbs focused on his NASCAR Joe Gibbs Racing brand until he decided to return to the Redskins from 2004 to 2007. In his four year return, Gibbs invigorated a struggling franchise and led the Redskins to two playoff seasons.
Gibbs is widely known as a democratic leader. Being a devout Christian, many cite Joe Gibbs as a very kind individual, especially for a football coach. Gibbs is notorious for bringing notoriety to relatively unknown, yet productive football players. As a result of his experience and success, he quietly commands respect from the lowest rookie to the biggest superstars. Personally, what I admire most about Joe Gibbs is his ability to adapt to different situations and still come out victorious. In all three Super Bowl wins, Gibbs had different starting quarterbacks and running backs. Clearly, this demonstrates that Gibbs was not a mediocre coach highlighted by phenomenal players, but a strategical genius who employed his resources wisely and efficiently.
Gibbs's biggest attribute is probably also his biggest flaw. Notorious for being a hard worker, Gibbs retired from his first coaching stint with the Redskins due to health problems. Gibbs retired his second time, citing that he wanted to spend more time with his family. Although Gibbs is a great coach, his extensive work schedule coaches him problems both mentally and physically.
Overall, Joe Gibbs will be forever immortalized in the hearts of Redskins fans and football fans alike, and will go down in history as one of the greatest coaches ever in the NFL.
