Egon Schiele, (June 12, 1890 – October 31, 1918) was an Austrian painter, at his prime edging the line between the Gustav Kilmt- led art nouveau movement (Jugendstil) and early German Expressionism. His artistic maturity can easily be traced: his earlier works were traditional expressions of the fledgling artist's environment, his artistic adolescence is marked by ornamental styles and other aspects that were directly influenced by his mentor Klimt, and finally his peak brought about intense depictions of the human form, human sexuality and human emotion.
An exploration of Shiele's works will reveal this maturity more in depth and will reveal other major influences in his artistic career. A closer look will expose how his demons and struggles in life led Shiele to produce the distinct chilling and distorted self-portraits and portraits of his models.
